Simon, zoon van Moses Cohen en Mietje Vaz Dias, werd op 10 november 1936 geboren in Amsterdam. Zijn moeder overleed een week na zijn geboorte naar aanleiding van complicaties tijdens de geboorte. Zijn vader is opnieuw getrouwd met Chaja Landau. Tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog zijn z’n ouders opgepakt door de Duitsers en gedeporteerd naar Sobibor. Simon heeft tijdens die periode ondergedoken gezeten bij een katholiek gezin. Pas na de oorlog hoorde Simon dat zijn ouders omgekomen waren en dat hij dus de enige van zijn familie het had overleeft.

Simon is in 1979 begonnen met een hobby abstract schilderen nadat hij als fotograaf voor het National Geographic heeft gewerkt. Deze hobby werd zijn obsessie en een belangrijke turning point in zijn leven.

Zijn werken hangen over de hele wereld en zijn allemaal te herkennen aan zijn signatuur; de drie XXX-en. Het XXX symbool op elk van zijn kunstwerk is van Amsterdam, waar hij geboren is. Het vertegenwoordigt mensheid, gelijkheid en vrijheid. " Het is de vrijheid van mening, van mensen, en van jezelf." Hij heeft de wereld rondgereisd zoekend naar inspiratie die heeft geleid tot zijn mooie unieke stijl. Hij had studio's over de wereld; van Parijs tot New York, van Amsterdam tot aan Thailand waar hij de laatste 24 jaar van zijn leven verbleef.

Nederlandse kunstenaar Simon Cohen was een zeldzaam persoon. Net als de meeste kunstenaars was hij moeilijk te begrijpen. Groots, helder en hield van provoceren; zijn unieke kleurrijke stijl van schilderen kan je in verwondering of in onverschilligheid achterlaten.

“Mensen hoeven mijn werk niet te begrijpen want ik begrijp het zelf ook niet. Wat er toe doet is dat mensen geraakt worden door mijn schilderijen.” Elk stuk gebaseerd op emoties. Simon noemde zijn werk Sensual Abstraction.

Hij is op 31 januari 2009 overleden aan de gevolgen van een auto-ongeluk in Thailand.

Only after the war Simon heard that his parents had died and that he is the only of his family had survived.

Simon has started a hobby abstract painting after working. As a photographer for the National Geographic in 1979 This hobby became his obsession and a major turning point in his life.

His paintings hang all over the world and are all recognized by its signature, the three XXX. The XXX symbol on each of his artwork is the signature of Amsterdam, where he was born. It represents humanity, equality and freedom. "It is the freedom of opinion, people, and yourself." He has traveled the world seeking inspiration that led to his beautiful unique style. He had studios around the world, from Paris to New York, from Amsterdam to Thailand where he spent the last 24 years of his life.

Dutch artist Simon Cohen was a rare person. Like most artists, he was hard to understand. Big, bright and loved provoke, its unique colorful style of painting can leave you in amazement or indifference.
